Many years away from its''open letters''(the best known in the Enrico Berlinguer), Bishop Emeritus of Ivrea, and one of the prophetic voices of the Italian church, Msgr. Bettazzi Louis, decided to take pen and paper to a new letter addressed this time to his brother, Bishop (CL) of San Marino-Montefeltro, Luigi Negri. A new''open letter''in response to an interview that the bishop had granted yesterday to the newspaper 'La Stampa' in which, in effect, delegating only to God,''the''personal''opinion''on the behavior of Prime Minister returning to 'clear' the government for its support for the so-called''non-negotiable values''such as life, family, freedom 'education. Rispetto poi alla sola valutazione per i politici del loro comportamento pubblico, il vescovo ricorda che ''chi sta in alto deve dare il buon esempio, perché esso, tanto più in quest'era mediatica, influisce sull'opinione pubblica. Ed è questo - aggiunge subito Bettazzi - che dovrebbe preoccupare noi vescovi, cioè il diffondersi, soprattutto nei giovani, dell'opinione che quello che conta è 'fare i furbi', è riuscire in ogni modo a conquistare e difendere il proprio interesse, il bene particolare, anche a costo di compromessi, come abbiamo visto nei genitori e nei fratelli che suggerivano alle ragazze di casa di vendersi ad alto prezzo''. ''All'indignazione - scrive poi Bettazzi al vescovo di san Marino - ella contrappone la sofferenza, e la richiede in primo luogo per la persecuzione dei cristiani; credo che se silenzi ed esitazioni ci sono stati lo siano stati in primo luogo dal governo, preoccupato per eventuali ricadute economiche o politiche. Ed anche la libertà dei cristiani e delle loro opere va rivendicata come uguaglianza ma senza privilegi, proprio per il compito che la chiesa ha assunto nel concilio di farsi promotrice di libertà e di sviluppo per tutta l'umanità. So, caro vescovo, che la sua difesa del governo interpreta il sentimento di una certa parte del mondo cattolico; - conclude mons. Bettazzi - credo però che essa debba tener conto delle tante contraddizioni che questo ignore, even for media manipulation, and that makes it so bewildered and so much suffering in the same Catholic world, its also because of certain alleged shell we bishops.''
